Music Director

St Philip's Episcopal Church - Indianapolis, IN
Part-time
Salary: $900.00 - $1,100.00 Monthly
Application Deadline: N/A
Nonprofit

St. Philip’s Episcopal Church seeks a director of music to serve this historically Black congregation with deep roots in Indianapolis’ Indiana Avenue neighborhood.  Since its founding in 1901, music has consistently been central to the identity of the church.  Today, the volunteer choir of this warm, multiracial church family offers music from diverse musical traditions including gospel, Anglican hymnody, spirituals, and contemporary praise.

Responsibilities include:

  • Accompanying all Sunday worship services and special services (i.e. Holy Week, Christmas Eve, Ash Wednesday)
  • Selecting music and distributing those selections to the rector and bulletin creator by the Tuesday preceding each Sunday service.
  • Distributing to the volunteer choir members music and other materials to support the learning of any new music.
  • Arriving an hour in advance of each worship service in order to personally rehearse, rehearse the choir, and talk through changes with the rector
  • Scheduling rehearsals with the choir on Sunday mornings or during the week as necessary
  • Pre-recording music for use by the choir to accompany the congregation on those Sundays when the music director cannot be physically present
  • Accompanying, as scheduling allows, funerals and weddings that occur at the church.

A successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to lead music from the diverse musical traditions represented in the parish, will have a history of working collaboratively and dependably with volunteers and supervisors, and will pass a required background check.  Familiarity with liturgical Christian traditions such as the Episcopal or Catholic churches is helpful, but not required.  Compensation and Sundays off are negotiable.

Interested applicants should submit a cover letter, resume, references, and two recordings to the attention of the Rev. Peter W. Gray, Interim Rector at [email protected]. One recording should be playing through one verse of “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” and the other is of the applicant’s choosing.

This position will remain open until filled.
